  • The Pap smear is a test that helps detect papilloma cells, cancer cells, some sexually transmitted infections, and the proper functioning of certain hormones.
  • It is recommended to have a Pap smear once a year after becoming sexually active.
  • Since papilloma does not show symptoms, annual check-ups are advised.
  • Cervical cancer is 100% curable if treated promptly.
  • Colposcopy is a detailed examination using a microscope (colposcope) to inspect the cervix, vagina, and vulva for abnormalities.
  • It is recommended to perform a Colposcopy and Pap Smear together, as they are complementary tests. One does not replace the other, and combining both results allows for more efficient HPV detection.
  • It is recommended to get a colposcopy test done once a year after becoming sexually active. If an HPV lesion is detected, depending on its nature, medical personnel will indicate how often a colposcopy should be performed.
  • Cervical cancer is 100% curable if treated in a timely manner.

Types of lesions detectable with colposcopy:

  • Condyloma warts
  • Lacerations
  • Inflammation of the cervix
  • Ulcers
  • Cancer in the cervix or vagina
  • Polyps
  • We take a sample (a small portion of the affected tissue for examination) which will be sent to a laboratory.
  • This process is performed with local anesthesia. You may experience some spotting or dark vaginal discharge for a few days after the biopsy.

We offer the following treatments for HPV lesions, depending on the medical personnel’s assessment:

  • Cryosurgery. It is done by applying an extremely cold liquid using an instrument called a cryoprobe. It serves to freeze and destroy precancerous cells and abnormal tissue.
  • Electrosurgery. The WHO recommends it for lesions known as CIN 1, which occupy more than 70% of the cervix, CIN 2 and CIN 3; or, other alterations of the cervix such as ulcers.
Electrosurgery is performed with local anesthesia, a cut is made under the cervix with a loop electrode to extract the lesion and subsequently burn the area.
  • Condyloma Treatment. Condylomas, also known as genital warts or condylomata acominata, are benign lesions caused by HPV. The diagnosis of condylomas is usually made through physical examination and treatment can be by physical or chemical methods.
  • Electrofulguration. It is the destruction of condylomas by heat; It is performed under local anesthesia applied with a small needle. Upon contact, the anesthesia produces burning that goes away in seconds, allowing you to not feel pain during the procedure.
